Phillip Island hosts major national and international sporting and musical events throughout the year. Phillip Island is just under 2 hours leisurely drive by car from the City of Melbourne, Victoria. It is one of Australia's most popular tourist destinations for day trips or longer stays. A broad variety of activities exist for the family or adult tourists. Each night (all year) you can visit Phillip Island Penguin Parade, containing a world class visitor (tourist) center complete with cafe, gift shop, museum and interactive educational computer displays.
Boardwalks at the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre lead through the sand-dunes to the beach. At dusk you can watch the Little (fairy) Penguins surf in on the tide, waddle up the beach and return to their burrows. Very cute!
Other eco-tourism and natural attractions for tourist's are open daily to the public. Mamy are now managed by environmentaland research organisation Phillip Island Nature Park (PINP). Included are Koala Conservation Center, Churchill Island, Rhyll Inlet, Swan Lake, Seal Rocks, The Nobbies plus many free public walks. Visit historic shipwrecks, surf or explore wild ocean or quiet bay beaches.
Phillip Island is the home of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) and World Superbike (WBSK) Round. AVESCO's V8 Supercars also race at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. Each day tourist's are welcome at the Circuit's tourism complex with its special motorsport display, cafe, giftshop and museum plus water gardens and native wildlife enclosures.
Tourist and Holiday Accommodation is plentiful and of high quality on Phillip Island. From budget hotels and motels to caravan parks, camp grounds, private holiday house rentals and bed and breakfasts.
Overview: Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia is 140 kilometers south-east of Melbourne. It is not difficult to find, with the route being simple, direct and no confusing turns or small streets to confuse the first time tourist. At each intersection it is very well signposted, plus distance to go signs along the entire journey. Most of your travelling is on wide well maintained divided road. In each direction there is two lanes for your comfort, over-taking and safety.
Driving Instructions: Travel from Melbourne on the South Eastern Freeway (a toll applies for the beginning inner city area) for apprpximately 45 minutes. You will pass signs indicating Dandenong as you get closer to the first major turn-ff. A few kilometers past the Dandenong signs, you will notice large green freeway signs clearly indicating a LEFT coming up, signposted clearly Phillip Island. You will receive quite a lot of notice, and repeated signs before this turn.
This is the beginning of the South Gippsland Highway which takes you all the way (appx. another hour, and through towns such as Tooradin and Grantville) to a large roundabout (Anderson) with clear signage indicating "turn right at roundabout" to Phillip Island. Go right like the sign indeicate. Nows its straight ahead through San Remo fishing village, over the bridge and you arrive on Phillip Island!

George Bass discovered Phillip Island when he entered Westernport Bay in January, 1798. Long before this it had for thousands of years been part of the lands roamed by the Bunurong people, the coastal to inland indigenous (Aboriginal) people of Australia.
Bass returned with Matthew Flinders in 1798, landing at Rhyll on Phillip Island. George Bass called it "Snapper Island" and a memorial to this landing is maintained near the pier at Rhyll. It's well worth visiting by the tourist.
Phillip Island received its current name In the early 1800's after the then colonial Governor Phillip. It wasn't until the 1840's that the McHaffie family, the first permanent settlers, took up residence with a pastoral lease that covered the entire island.
By the 1870's more than a one hundred and sixty settlers called Phillip Island home; the population in 2005/06 is approximately 7000 permanent residents.
Phillip Island grew and prospered in the 200 years since it was first discovered by Europeans. Little Penguins (fairy penguins) who are native to Phillip Island were soon bringing in thousands of tourists to view their nightly return from the ocean. The local roads became the home of the first Australian Grand Prix for cars in 1928 and later the place where the Armstrong 500, the forerunner to today's famous Bathurst 1000 was held.
To protect the Island's natural wonders and wildlife, the Phillip Island Nature Park was formed in the late 1990's, combining the significant eco-tourist and environment protection services of the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, Koala Conservation Centre, Churchill Island and many other significant conservation and tourism locations.
