Phillip Island Activities, Events, Features: What to Do and More
Phillip Island is about 2 hours drive from Melbourne, Victoria. It is a popular tourist destination, for day trips, weekends, or longer stays. It has calm family friendly beaches that face onto Westernport Bay, and a variety of patrolled surf beaches on the more rugged coastline facing Bass Strait.
A variety of activities are available for all the family. Every night of the year you can visit the Penguin Parade. This is a world class visitor centre with cafe, gift shop, museum and interactive displays. Boardwalks through the sand-dunes lead you down to the beach. Here each dusk you can watch the Little (fairy) Penguins walk up the beach and return to their burrows. Many other eco-tourism and natural attractions are open to the public each day. These include the Koala Conservation Center, Churchill Island, Rhyll Inlet, Swan Lake, Seal Rocks, The Nobbies plus many more free public walks. Visit shipwrecks, surf or explore ocean or quiet bay beaches. Phillip Island is also the home of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) and World Superbike Round. The V8 Supercars also race at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. There is a special motorsport display, cafe, giftshop and museum plus water gardens and native wildlife to visit. Local surf shops also offer surfing lessons or safaris, there are horse riding tours or hire, go-kart tracks, Fun Shed for younger children, Mazes and mini-golf, and amusement arcades. Many places are easily located in the heart of Cowes on Phillip Island, and all others are well sign-posted if off the main tourist road.
